For achieving a homogeneous, flawless coating it is important to find an effective flow agent, particularly with aqueous systems. Coatings are mostly disturbed by differences in the surface tensions between coating and ground. Silicone polyethers which were specifically developed for this application prevent such flow disturbances through their surface activity. The targeted adjustment of hydrophobic and hydrophilic structure elements of silicone polyethers allows the use of these flow agents in various liquid systems in the colour, varnish and adhesive industry. Silicone additives do not only improve the flow properties but they can also influence further surface properties. By means of special modifications silicones can change the scratch resistance, gloss or smoothness of a surface. An increased surface smoothness helps significantly to improve the scratch resistance and abrasion fastness. On the one hand, the even application of the coating is optimised by adding silicone additives, and on the other hand surface-active silicone polyethers concentrate on the surface thus forming a gliding film, which leads to a reduced friction resistance and to a reduced sensitivity of the surface to mechanical impact.
